I can't believe I am back on my blog with a very unusual topic but I.O.I and Produce 101 are something that I have really wanted to write about because I want to look back at this post and remember how addicted I was to the show. Or I might end up deleting this post out of embarrassment but for now, let's continue.
I am sure many of my Korean friends are aware that I am obsessed with a few K-Pop girl groups. It seems like as I get older, I lose more and more interest in the boy bands and instead, I enjoy listening to the girl bands more.
But even with my huge obsession with the girl groups, when I first saw the teaser for the show Produce 101, I was displeased with the whole idea. I mean, 101 girls?! All singing the same song?! I literally had to pause and quit after watching 10 seconds of the 'Pick Me' video!
In the end, however, as you can probably tell, I found myself enjoying the show. It was interesting to see the different personalities, backgrounds, the results, songs and so on.
At first, it was Mina because she has this lovely, carefree and bubbly character. She was really confident all the time despite the fact that her singing isn't as good as the other two from Jellyfish entertainment who are by the way, both older than her.
But after watching the 'Irony' performance by the group led by Hae In, she became my favourite and I decided to support her all the way. I know she received a lot of hate for taking all the roles but as she explained, she did that because she was the only 'A' class in her team and she wanted the other members in her group to get the benefits and move up the rank ladder. Her position was already 'secure' for the next round whereas other members in her team were all in very risky positions so at least to me, what she said made perfect sense. She worked very hard for not just herself but for the whole team and that really made me want to support her.
There were five songs that were specially composed for the top 35 Produce 101 members and they are referred to as 'concept' songs. I liked 'Yum Yum', 'Fingertips' and 'In The Same Place' but my top favourite song has to be 'Fingertips'! It has a very fun, addictive tune to it and it feels very unique whereas 'Yum Yum' sounds really like Red Velvelt's 'Dumb Dumb' (even the title!) and strangely, the outfits were also similar in terms of design and everything. It's just unoriginal. 'In The Same Place' is a great song, was not a surprise to me that the group who did the song won that round but how should I say ... it's just a typical, classic Korean 'angelic' girl group song. But I really like the lyrics and how the girls can relate to the meaning of the song. Jin Young, the guy who composed the song is one very talented producer, he is really young as well! Lots of respect.
I think I'm going to end the post here, I wanted to talk about I.O.I but I think that should be in a separate blog post.
It's good to be blogging again!
